The Keepers: Photographing an Ait Atta Nomad Migration for Black Tomato
Jbel Saghro, Morocco
Abdellah Azizi, Moroccan photographer and filmmaker based in Marrakech, photographed and filmed an Ait Atta nomad family for Black Tomato, the UK travel company, in September 2026, during their four-day migration back to the Jbel Saghro mountains in southern Morocco.
The brief
Black Tomato needed photographs and video of the family on the move for The Keepers, its experience built around walking with the Ait Atta on their seasonal migration. The assignment was four days of documentary coverage following the family across the Jbel Saghro.
The challenge
The family does not travel as one group. The father walks with the donkeys carrying the family’s luggage, while the mother and daughter take a separate path with the goats. With four days and one photographer, covering both at once was impossible, so Azizi alternated: one day with the father, another with the mother and daughter. He kept up with the pace of the animals and filmed as many sequences as possible on the move. In the evenings he stayed close for quieter family moments.
Deliveries
RAW photographs and video clips, including sit-down interviews, delivered to Black Tomato, whose team edited the final material in-house.
Where it appears
The experience is published on Black Tomato’s website: The Keepers: Morocco.
