Assignment: Rabat for The Washington Post

I was commissioned by The Washington Post to photograph Morocco’s capital for their travel feature, “In Morocco, Rabat is a seaside jewel hiding in plain sight.”

The Brief: The editorial goal was to move beyond the clichés often associated with Moroccan travel photography. Rabat is a city of order, Atlantic light, and modern cultural ambition. My task was to capture it as a liveable, sophisticated capital, rather than a chaotic tourist stop.

On the ground, I avoided the staged or “exotic” and instead focused on capturing Rabat’s true character. I worked with the soft coastal haze that defines the city’s morning light to convey its Atlantic atmosphere, documented the dialogue between the historic medina and the modern structures to highlight architectural contrast, and prioritized real environments and unforced moments that reflect how the city is actually lived in.

This assignment was an opportunity to show a different side of Rabat, quiet, coastal, and culturally deep.
